Cipollino marble
Marble · Italy
Wavy dark and light green bands run horizontally across a light green background: that is Cipollino marble, an Italian marble with a dense pattern. It works best on walls and in bathrooms, with the waves in full view.

What Cipollino Marble looks like
A light green background and dark green in waves: the slab in the photo alternates dense horizontal bands that run across it from edge to edge. The contrast between the two greens is high, with white present in the pattern. Within the slab the pattern changes markedly: at the center the bands curve until they close into an eye. The polish in the photo shines. Every slab brings its own rhythm: yours is chosen from photos.

Where to use Cipollino marble?
- BathroomsVanities and walls; honed for shower and floor
- WallsFull walls where the waves show edge to edge
- Interior floorsHome floors; the shine wears away in traffic areas
- TablesDining tables; the marble takes on a patina over the years
- KitchenCountertops only if you accept acid marks and patina
- OutdoorsThe weak point: sun and rain wear away the polish
- ScratchesLow
- StainsMedium, with sealer
- AcidsLow
If the bathroom has a shower or a floor in this stone, order it honed: the glossy polish is slippery when wet.
Cipollino Marble finishes
With bands this marked, what the finish changes is the shine and the feel, not the pattern.
-
Polished
The one in the photo: the high gloss stretches the contrast and makes the green waves read boldly.
-
Honed
Takes off the shine and leaves a matte finish: the right choice for showers and areas that get wet.
-
Brushed
Fine stripes to the touch and a matte finish: along with honed, the other option for bathroom floors that get wet.
-
Antiqued
Matte, with the relief of aged stone: the waves tell more by touch than by shine.

Questions about Cipollino marble
How is it different from Cipollino Verde?
Cipollino Verde has a warm white background with fine stripes of greenish veining: a restrained green. This Cipollino takes the green all the way, with wavy, high-contrast bands that dominate the slab. If your wall wants the starring role, this is the one; if you want calm, the other.
Does it work for a kitchen countertop?
It works if you accept what comes with marble: where lemon or wine lands, the shine turns matte at that spot and the mark stays. If you prefer a countertop without everyday marks, compare them in the marble or granite guide. The kitchen backsplash, on the other hand, gets less use and shows the bands whole.
What care does Cipollino marble need?
For cleaning, a damp cloth and pH-neutral soap; wipe up any acidic liquid that splashes right away. With sealer on, the stone drinks less water; the drop test tells you whether to apply it or reapply. Over the years, a re-polish brings the shine back to the marked areas.
How do I choose a slab when each one is different?
The image on this page is a true Cipollino slab. The pattern shifts a lot across the surface, so the piece for your order is chosen separately. Before you buy, we send you photos of the slabs available for your order.
