Granite, marble or onyx table?

A dining table takes plates, glasses and elbows every day. A coffee table, almost nothing. That difference decides the stone.

  • Portoro marble slab

    Marble

    Holds up
Generations of use, with the patina of a lived-in piece. It is the stone of the great dining tables.
    Keep in mind
Wine, lemon and coffee leave dull marks on it even when sealed. In a lappato finish they show far less.

  • Slab of Titanium Black granite

    Granite

    Holds up
Hot serving dishes, cutlery and children: it barely absorbs and acids do not dull it.
    Keep in mind
Its pattern is grain more than veining. For a table where you eat every day, it is the worry-free choice.

  • Green onyx slab

    Onyx

    Holds up
A light from within: it is translucent, and a backlit side table becomes the lamp of the room.
    Keep in mind
It is soft and fragile. It belongs on coffee tables or decorative side tables, with coasters and away from knocks.

Marble dining table: thickness, edge and base

Whether the table looks solid and rests well is decided before the cut.

  1. 2-cm topThe most used thickness for tables. It weighs a third less than a 3-cm one, something you appreciate when carrying it up to a high floor.
  2. Mitered apronA strip of the same slab is joined to the edge cut at 45°. The veining turns the corner uncut and the edge reads 6 to 8 cm.
  3. Solid 3-cm topMore rigid on long tables or ones with a large overhang, with a straight, beveled or rounded edge.
  4. SupportsStone handles weight well, but not bending. On a rectangular table the supports sit close to the ends so the top never hangs unsupported.
  5. PedestalA round table sits well on a wide central pedestal, with a support plate under the top that spreads the weight.
  6. OverhangIt is the stone that extends past the base. On the oval table, two pedestals leave room for the chairs at the ends without an excessive overhang.

A marble dining table for everyday use?

On a marble dining table, wine, lemon and coffee leave dull marks where they land. The sealer holds back the color stain, but not that loss of shine. In a lappato finish the marks are almost invisible and the table gains an even patina; in polished they show against the light.

If your table sees daily meals and children, granite holds up without asking for care. Onyx tables are decorative pieces: they want coasters, distance from knocks and neutral cleaners.

How much a marble table costs

The stone makes the biggest difference, then the size of the top: a dining table for eight can need a whole slab. A mitered apron and a custom base add work.

Questions about marble tables

The same stone can go on your kitchen countertop. And here, how the stone reaches your country.

What thickness is best for a marble table?

For a dining table, a 2-cm top with a mitered apron looks solid and weighs less. Solid 3 cm suits long tables or ones with a large overhang. On a coffee table, 2 cm is usually enough.

Does the table come with a base?

As you prefer. We arrange a wood or metal base together with the top. If you already have one, we ship just the top: send us its measurements and where it rests.

How do you care for a marble dining table?

With coasters, a pH-neutral cleaner and the sealer renewed every one or two years. Wipe spills right away: wine, lemon and coffee leave dull marks, which show less in a lappato finish.

Do you make marble dining tables for 6 or 8 chairs?

Yes. Some clients ask for it as a marble dining set. The top is cut to the size of your space and the people you want to seat: tell us the available length and how many chairs. We propose the dimensions and the base.

Do you ship marble tables to other countries?

Yes. We ship to any country and, when the project calls for it, we also arrange installation. The top travels in a wooden crate with the corners and the edge protected.
