Custom baseboards, thresholds and marble details

We arrange the fabrication of every piece to your measurements, in the same stone as the floor or in one that contrasts with it. We ship to any country and, when the project calls for it, we also arrange installation.

A threshold in granite, marble or travertine

A threshold is stepped on more than any other tile in the house. You choose the stone for the traffic it takes and for whether it gets wet.

  • Steel Grey granite slab

    Granite

    Holds up
The front door, where sand and water walk in every day. Also the window sills that take the rain.
    Keep in mind
Polished slips when wet. Outdoors, order it flamed or brushed.

  • Slab of Carrara marble

    Marble

    Holds up
Interior thresholds, baseboards, shelves and niches, above all when they continue the stone of the floor or the bathroom.
    Keep in mind
Acid cleaners leave dull marks on it. Clean it with a neutral soap, and in a lappato finish the marks show less.

  • Roman travertine slab

    Travertine

    Holds up
Pool copings, window sills and terraces. In light tones it stays cool under the sun.
    Keep in mind
Next to water it goes unfilled or antiqued so it grips underfoot. Filled and polished is for indoors.

Baseboards, straight or bullnosed

The edge is what you see most on a small piece. These are the profiles ordered for baseboards, thresholds, shelves and copings.

Edge profiles in section: straight, beveled, bullnosed, mitered, a drip groove under a window sill, and a bullnosed baseboard against the wall and floor 2 cm 123456 Straight Beveled Bullnosed Mitered Drip groove Bullnose baseboard arris
  1. StraightA flat edge with the arrises just softened so they do not chip. It goes with straight-line floors and walls.
  2. BeveledAn angled cut on the arris that draws a line of light along the edge and protects the corner from knocks.
  3. Bullnose and half bullnoseA bullnose rounds the whole edge; a half bullnose, only the top arris. It is the edge for thresholds, shelves and pool copings because it leaves no sharp corners.
  4. MiteredTwo pieces cut at 45° and joined at the corner. The veining turns with them and a 2-cm slab looks like a solid block.
  5. Drip grooveA groove under the edge of window sills and pool copings. The water drops there instead of running underneath to the wall, which keeps the wall from staining.
  6. Bullnose baseboardA baseboard with the top arris rounded: it gathers no dust and does not chip against the broom. It usually measures 7 to 10 cm tall.

How much a marble baseboard costs

Baseboards are quoted by the linear meter; thresholds, shelves and window sills by the piece. A bullnose or a drip groove adds work to every piece. A miter also calls for the veining to match at the corner.

Questions about baseboards, thresholds and shelves

For the rest of the staircase, see marble and granite stairs. Compare the two most requested stones in Marble or granite? and see how the stone reaches your country.

What is a bullnose baseboard?

A baseboard with the top edge rounded. It holds no dust on the edge and stands up better to the broom and the vacuum than a straight edge. Called baseboard in the US and skirting in the UK.

How thick is a granite or marble threshold?

Usually 2 cm, matching the width of the door frame. If the two floors it joins sit at different heights, the threshold is beveled so there is no step. At a front door, flamed or brushed granite is the better choice: it does not turn slippery with rain.

What stone is best for a pool coping?

Unfilled or antiqued travertine, and flamed granite. Both give wet feet a grip, and in light tones they stay cool in the sun. The coping carries a bullnosed edge toward the water so nobody gets hurt climbing out.

Baseboard, skirting or skirting board: are they the same?

Yes. It is the trim between floor and wall: baseboard in the US, skirting in the UK. The piece under the window also goes by several names: shelf, window sill or window ledge.

Do you ship baseboards and thresholds to other countries?

Yes. We ship to any country and, when the project calls for it, we also arrange installation. Every piece travels numbered according to your plan, so you know where each one goes when you open the crates.
