What Fossil Black Marble looks like
A deep black background carries elongated, cone-shaped fossils and light shells across the whole slab: no veins cross the black. The fossils read in light gray and grayish white; the contrast with the background is high. The photo shows the polished sheen. Within the slab, the fossil distribution changes moderately.

Where to use Fossil Black marble?
- BathroomsFull bathrooms; in the shower, honed instead of polished
- WallsWalls where the fossils stand out one by one
- Interior floorsHolds up as a home floor; where traffic is heaviest, the sheen gives way
- TablesDining tables; wine without a coaster leaves a mark
- KitchenWith conditions: acids leave their mark on the polish
- OutdoorsOutdoors the marble loses its sheen; it is not its terrain
- ScratchesLow
- StainsMedium, with sealer
- AcidsLow
On a black background, dust and water marks show more than on a light stone: keep that in mind when choosing between a polished and a matte finish.
The finish on a black slab
Each finish changes the sheen of the black and what shows on it.
-
Polished
The one in the photo: the polish shines and makes each light gray fossil stand out against the black.
-
Honed
Matte; in showers and on wet floors the foot grips better than on a polished sheen.
-
Brushed
The other option that works in wet areas, alongside honed.
-
Antiqued
A muted sheen and the air of aged stone; see it in photos before you decide.

Questions about Fossil Black marble
How is it different from Nero Boreale marble?
Both are black marble with fossils. Nero Boreale leans blue and carries curved white shells, clearly visible; Fossil Black stays deep black and spreads elongated, cone-shaped fossils across the slab. Before you buy, we send you photos of the slabs available for your order.
Does Fossil Black work as a kitchen countertop?
You can, with the character of marble up front: lemon, vinegar and tomato leave a dull mark on the polish; it is a chemical reaction, not a stain. If you take that patina of use as part of the stone's life, go ahead; if you want a countertop that stands up better to acids, granite is the stronger case.
How do you clean it, and when does it need sealing?
Water and pH-neutral soap are enough; the urgent thing is to wipe lemon, wine and any acid as soon as it lands. To know whether it is time to seal, drop water on it: if the wet area darkens, the stone is absorbing and needs sealer.
