white travertine

Travertine · Italy

A very even creamy ivory, with horizontal waves you can barely see, fills the photo of the white travertine slab. It performs on walls, floors and bathrooms; with open pores it also works outdoors.

It is also known as Travertino Bianco.

What white travertine looks like

White is a trade name: the slab in the photo has a creamy ivory background, with touches of cream and light beige. Its pattern is cloudy and carries soft horizontal waves that are almost imperceptible. With contrast that low, no vein stands over that background. Within the slab the pattern does not change; every slab is different, and you choose yours from photos of the slabs available.

On a bathroom floor, order it with filled pores and a honed finish: it is less slippery than polished.

White Travertine finishes

With travertine, the finish decides the surface sheen; the pores come filled or open depending on the use.

  • Polished

Smooth and glossy with filled pores; an acid mark shows more on it than on a matte finish.

  • Honed

Matte, with none of the polished sheen; on a wet bathroom floor it is less slippery.

  • Antiqued

A rustic open-pored surface, the one for facades and pool copings.

Questions about White Travertine

Is white travertine a marble?

No. It is a limestone that forms in hot springs, and its pores are gas bubbles trapped as it formed. Next to it, marble is denser and pore-free. When you order white travertine you choose between filled pores for a smooth surface and open pores for a rustic look.

Are white travertine and Travertino Bianco the same stone?

Yes. Travertino Bianco is another way of writing white travertine: both names point to the same stone. Before you buy, we send you photos of the slabs available for your order.

What happens if I use white travertine as a kitchen countertop?

Lemon, vinegar or tomato leave a dull etch mark, just like on marble; it shows more on a polished finish. If you want a countertop with no marks, this is not the right stone. The kitchen page compares the options.

What care does white travertine need?

Neutral soap and water for daily cleaning; acidic cleaners etch it. Sealing is a good idea, and in wet areas check the pore filling from time to time. On the creamy ivory of the slab in the photo, a wine or coffee stain shows.
