selenite
Semi-precious stone · Greece
In silvery white with a silky shine, the selenite in the photo builds its pattern from rectangular pieces in rows with fine striations. It is translucent: a light switched on behind it transforms it completely.

What selenite looks like
On this slab, selenite reads as an orderly mosaic: rectangular pieces in rows over a silvery white background. Each piece carries fine striations and a silky shine, the sign of the bright polish on the surface. The tones run from white to pearl gray, with low contrast that keeps the pattern even across the slab. And because the stone is translucent, backlighting changes the whole pattern.

The shine of the polish, or the light behind it
Polished is the finish in the photo; the other way to show the slab is an even light behind it.

Questions about selenite
What is Selenite?
Selenite is another way of spelling the name of this stone: it is the same handmade panel. It is assembled by bonding pieces of natural semi-precious stone with resin onto a backing.
Is selenite a single stone?
No. It is handmade work: pieces of natural selenite bonded with resin onto a backing. On the slab you can tell that they are joined pieces, not one solid stone surface. Before you buy, we send you photos of the slabs available for your order.
Does selenite scratch with use?
Yes, easily: selenite is very soft, 2 on the Mohs scale. It performs better on a wall than on a working surface; on a table, avoid dragging objects across it. To clean it, a soft cloth with water is enough; leave out abrasive products and solvents.
Can selenite be backlit?
It can be done: light passes through the stone and the whole slab changes. The lighting fixture must stay separate from the slab, because direct heat damages the resin.
How is it different from shell mother of pearl?
In its photo, the freshwater shell mother of pearl looks almost uniform, with very small pearly pieces. In the selenite's, the pattern comes from rectangular pieces in rows, each with fine striations. Both come in white; what changes is the pattern of the pieces.
